Oregano oil inhibits lung cancer
Origanum majorana essential oil decreases lung tumor growth and metastasis in vitro and in vivo.
We explored the anticancer potential of Origanum majorana essential oil (OMEO) on non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) using two significant human cancer cell lines: A549 and LNM35. Through a series of pre-clinical experiments, we observed that OMEO significantly reduced the viability of these cancer cells and inhibited their colony growth in a way that depends on the concentration used.
Additionally, we noted that OMEO slowed the growth of tumors derived from A549 and LNM35 cells both in chick embryos and in nude mice models. Our findings also revealed that OMEO effectively decreased cancer cell migration and invasion, alongside reducing the incidence and growth of lymph node metastases in mice. Remarkably, treatment with OMEO over three months did not interfere with the normal functions of blood, kidneys, or liver.
Overall, our study highlights OMEO as a promising and safe anticancer option, particularly for those facing the challenges of lung cancer.

Oregano extract induces lung cancer cell death
Origanum syriacum Induces Apoptosis in Lung Cancer Cells by Altering the Ratio of Bax/Bcl2.
We investigated how the methanol extract of Origanum syriacum, commonly known as oregano, affects lung cancer cells, particularly A549 cells. Our study aimed to understand whether this natural extract could suppress cell growth and induce programmed cell death, or apoptosis, which is crucial in targeting cancer cells.
We first checked the cell viability of A549 cells after exposure to various concentrations of oregano extract. Our observations revealed that higher concentrations led to a notable decline in cell growth and prompted significant changes in cell structure. At the 200 mg/ml dose, many cell membranes appeared to break down, indicating a strong response to the treatment.
Moreover, at a lower dose of 25 μg/ml, we noted an increase in Bax expression—a protein that promotes apoptosis—as well as a rise in late apoptotic cells. We also identified key phenolic compounds like vanillic acid and luteolin in the extract, which may contribute to its beneficial effects.
Overall, the evidence suggests that oregano extract can effectively block lung cancer cell growth and induce apoptosis, showcasing its potential as a natural therapeutic agent.

Fun fact: The ancient Greeks used Oregano oil as an antidote! The manufacturer recommends 1 softgel 1–3 times daily. Oregano is an effective natural antibiotic. During my illness, my husband and I took numerous IHERB supplements, but Oregano twice daily was essential! Combined with other treatments, it prevented the virus from infecting my lungs, resulting in a "mild form" of the disease. It can sometimes cause belching, but that doesn't happen constantly. Even children can swallow the small gelatine capsules. I suggest starting Oregano in autumn or winter; it has helped our family immensely!

Carvacrol inhibits lung cancer growth
Effects of Carvacrol on a Human Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer (NSCLC) Cell Line, A549.
We explored how carvacrol, the main component found in oregano, impacts a specific type of lung cancer known as non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), particularly using the A549 cell line for our experiments. Carvacrol is well-known for its various health benefits, which include antibacterial and antioxidant effects. In our study, we incubated A549 cells with different concentrations of carvacrol and observed its effects on cell health and growth.
Our observations revealed that as we increased the dosage of carvacrol, the number of living cells decreased significantly. Not only did we notice a reduction in cell count, but we also saw marked changes in cell shape and structure, indicating physical degeneration. Under light microscopy, the treated cells demonstrated signs of distress, such as detachment from the surface, rounding, and irregular shapes.
The findings show that carvacrol can effectively inhibit cell growth in lung cancer cells. While this study highlights the potential of carvacrol derived from oregano in combating NSCLC, we should note that it does not specifically isolate the effects of oregano itself. Thus, while carvacrol's influence is significant, we must remain cautious about broadening these results to the wider effects of oregano as a whole.

Thyme extracts may protect DNA
Quantification of DNA damage products by gas chromatography tandem mass spectrometry in lung cell lines and prevention effect of thyme antioxidants on oxidative induced DNA damage.
We aimed to investigate how thyme extracts, particularly from oregano, can help combat oxidative DNA damage in lung cancer cells. In our study, we focused on different thyme products, including standard compounds like carvacrol and thymol, as well as extracts and oils derived from thyme. The effectiveness of these antioxidants was tested on malignant lung cells known as A549.
Our experiments included assessing the antioxidant capacity of these thyme extracts and analyzing their components. We discovered that the antioxidant capacity of thyme oil was significant, with measured effectiveness comparable to standard antioxidants. The crucial finding was that thymoquinone emerged as the most potent defender against oxidative damage, while the water-methanol extract of thyme also showed promise as a protective agent.
Furthermore, we extended our research to healthy lung cells, revealing that both thymoquinone and the thyme water-methanol extract provided protection against DNA damage in these cells too. Overall, our findings suggest the potential of oregano-derived thyme extracts in preserving DNA integrity and possibly aiding in lung cancer prevention and treatment.
